Termux installation: match release origin and Android signatures

What causes the failure

Termux packages run inside an Android app sandbox, not a full Linux distribution. Termux and plugins such as Termux:API must be compatible and signed by the same distribution source. Official F-Droid and GitHub releases use different signing keys; mixing their APKs can produce signature mismatch or installation failures. An unknown repackaged APK is not a shortcut to a working environment.

Controlled diagnostic commands

Commands are diagnostics or labeled examples. Verify paths and preserve data before making changes.

printf 'PREFIX=%s\nHOME=%s\n' "$PREFIX" "$HOME"
uname -m
command -v pkg || echo "pkg unavailable"
command -v termux-info && termux-info
# Review the source of your installed Termux app in Android settings.
# Never copy executable files from an untrusted mirror.

Repair in evidence-based order

First verify the origin and build of the already installed app before updating anything. For signature mismatch, back up private projects and configuration, then follow the official documented migration process if you actually need to change distribution source. Installing a replacement APK over a differently signed app is not expected to work. Keep the primary app and all plugins from one consistent source.

Hands-on exercise

Prepare a backup inventory of $HOME projects, SSH configuration and package names without copying secrets into shared logs. On a test device or emulator, record what happens when package signatures do not match. Do not uninstall a working installation just to complete the exercise.

Verification and sources

Record Android/Termux versions, exact command, first error and the after-fix result. Behavior depends on Android releases: verify current documentation at https://github.com/termux/termux-app and https://wiki.termux.dev/ .
