Ring

Working model

Ring emphasizes readable scripting and has a visual application ecosystem. Statements such as see and give are language keywords, not arbitrary library names.

Focused source example

see "Total: " + (4 + 5) + nl

Use a numeric counter and print the value before and after incrementing. Verify text conversion rules in the actual installed interpreter.

Evidence to collect

Record the exact Ring compiler or runtime version, required dependencies, and output from harmless test data. Predict an observation before checking it, and keep both the initial and revised source to show which change caused the result. Do not claim that a displayed fragment was executed if the platform is unavailable.

Failure mode worth investigating

If string/number concatenation differs from the host language, separate arithmetic from formatting instead of assuming coercion.

Ring: applied exercises

Establish a minimal arithmetic loop

Ring is a dynamically typed language with its own scripting syntax. Save the following in a temporary squares.ring:

for n = 1 to 3
    see n * n + nl
next

The intended sequence is 1, 4, 9, each on a separate line. Ring uses see for output and nl for a line break. Verify operator grouping and the actual display with the installed Ring interpreter rather than assuming behavior based solely on visual similarity to BASIC. Record runtime version and exact invocation.

Predict the boundary first

Change to 3 to to 1 and determine how many iterations are expected. Then use a value of zero inside an independently created sequence to check multiplication by zero. A loop boundary controls the number of iterations; it should not silently change the arithmetic rule. Try a descending range only after consulting the supported step syntax of the installed Ring release.

Diagnose an interpreter failure

In a disposable copy omit next and record the parser's actual response. Restore syntax, then use an undefined variable in the expression and identify whether the failure occurs during evaluation. These are not interchangeable. Resist adding a generic error catcher before finding the smallest reproduction.

Independent utility

Create a word that classifies integers as even or odd and writes a report for 1 through 10. Predict the exact counts (five each), then check 0, negative values and a nonnumeric input. Choose a specific policy for invalid data instead of accepting an accidental string-to-number conversion. Compare output format on Windows, Linux and any genuinely supported target. Ring — Focused mastery pathway

Language model and syntax

Write a Ring function that reads a list of numeric values, computes a total and rejects entries outside a specified range.

Intermediate exercise and counterexample

Compare object-oriented constructs with procedural functions on the same dataset; test shared mutable state and isolate ownership to avoid cross-call contamination.

Independent project and verification

Create a small desktop UI displaying a filtered list where RingQt is actually available. Fall back to CLI verification in environments lacking GUI bindings; record the precise interpreter/version.
