How the language behaves

Stata combines tabular data manipulation, estimation commands and reproducible do-files for statistical analysis.

Source fragment to analyze

clear
input x y
1 3
2 5
3 7
end
regress y x

Deliberate exercise

Calculate the expected slope by hand before running the regression and check the effect of removing one observation.

Check a failure condition

An association in a regression output is not a causal claim; check sample design, missing values and assumptions.

Record input, expected output and observed output with the actual Stata implementation and version. If no compatible runtime exists on your current platform, label the fragment unexecuted and reason from its semantics rather than claiming a successful run. Run a second isolated experiment that changes only the mechanism under investigation; preserve the exact diagnostic while removing private data.

Stata — Expanded practice workbook

Start with actual syntax

The archive's starter gives a minimal valid entry point for Stata. Read its operators, declarations and output mechanism; then verify it with the correct interpreter rather than treating another language's syntax as interchangeable.

display "Hello, Ada!"

Run context: stata -b do hello.do (installation dependent).. Before editing, check the exact compiler or interpreter version and save its output. Keep this exercise in a scratch directory, not inside a production project.

Guided laboratory

Write a do-file with group/points, run bysort group: egen total = total(points), then contrast that repeated group total with collapse (sum). Protect data using preserve/restore.

Boundary-case investigation

collapse mutates the dataset in memory and byte integer types have small ranges. Keep source do-file and verify imported missing values.

Extended assignment

Starting from the exact sample, implement the guided lab in a separate file, then attempt one change involving ordering, shape, type, scope or environment as appropriate to Stata. Explain your invariant and compare expected versus actual output in a small table. Preserve a minimal reproducer for any unexpected behavior; only then expand the example.
