Definition

Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting systems, networks, applications and data from unauthorized access, disruption, modification or destruction. A secure system should allow the right people to use information in the intended way while resisting mistakes and attacks.

Why it matters

Computers, phones, websites, banking systems, cloud services and social platforms all process valuable information. A security failure can cause privacy loss, fraud, service outages, damaged equipment or loss of trust.

Common threats

Malware

Malicious software is designed to damage a system, spy on users or gain unauthorized control. Common categories include viruses, worms, trojans and ransomware.

Phishing

Phishing uses deceptive messages or pages to persuade someone to disclose passwords, payment information or other sensitive data. Technical controls help, but careful verification is equally important.

Password attacks

Weak and reused passwords make brute force, password spraying and credential stuffing more effective. Unique passwords and multi-factor authentication reduce this risk.

Web attacks

Applications can contain weaknesses such as SQL injection or cross-site scripting. These issues are tested only with clear authorization and inside controlled labs.

The CIA triad

  • Confidentiality: information is available only to authorized people and systems.
  • Integrity: information remains accurate and cannot be altered without authorization.
  • Availability: systems and data remain accessible when legitimate users need them.

Cybersecurity in practice

Security also includes system administration, secure software design, monitoring, incident response, risk management, user education and recovery planning. Effective security is a continuous process, not a single product.
